Day 25: May 1, 2012

Day 25                                                                                                    Written May 1, 2012 9:17pm
Dallas fell asleep around 1am this morning. He slept so much yesterday afternoon, he just couldn't get back to sleep.

The doctors came in around 630am to take Dallas down to the surgical holding room. Before transporting him downstairs, the nurse gave him a dose of Versed to try and keep his anxiety down. After he saw what was going on, he pulled the covers over his head, we think he knew what was happening and he was trying to disassociate himself from the situation again.

When we got down to the surgical holding room, Dallas was asleep, so maybe the Versed helped him afterall, at least this time. When they took him back to surgery, he wasn't aware of what was going on (as far as we know, as he had the blanket pulled over his head still). At 8am, they called to let us know they were in surgery and had already put in the pick line and things were going smoothly so far.

Dallas came out of surgery around 2pm, though he didn't get back to his room until 330pm. It seemed like it took forever. But things went well. They peeled back some of the cadaver skin to see how it was healing underneath, they said it's continuing to heal better than expected. They placed some new cadaver skin in a few areas, hoping it will continue to promote healing. They also did a very thorough cleaning and dressing change. Dr. Zeller said that there are some areas on his back that are beginning to heal nicely (when they previously thought they'd have to graft there). He continues to surprise everyone with the way his body is healing. They are sure the arm will have to be grafted, the upper right leg, the right flank, some areas on his chest and back, and his forehead... but other areas are healing to where he won't require grafting, which is amazing. The power of praying is definitely helping! They have also planned his next surgery for next Tuesday.

Dallas slept most of the day, waking up for only a few hours to spend some time with daddy, watching tv, playing the game, and now back to sleep. Hopefully he will have a restful night.
